（一）用于特指某人或某事
例: This is the house where grandpa once lived. 这是爷爷曾经住过的房子。
The girl in red is my sister.穿红衣服的女孩是我妹妹。
（二）用来复述上文提过的人/事物（第一次提到用a/an，后文再次提到用the）
例: He bought a house. I’ve been to the house. 他买了栋房子。我去过那栋房子。
I have a pen .The pen is blue.我有一支钢笔。这支钢笔是蓝色的。
（三）特指谈话的双方都知道的人或事物。
Listen to the teacher carefully,please.请认真听老师讲课。
（四）用于方位名词前表方向
例: in the east 在东方 in the front 在前面
at the back 在后面
in the bottom 在底部 at the top 在顶部
on the right 在右边 on the left 在左边
（五）与单数名词连用表类别
例: I hate the telephone. 我讨厌电话。
The horse is a useful animal.
马是一种有用的动物。
注意：像这类句子还有如下两种写法
A horse is a useful animal.
Horses are useful animals.
（六）用在序数词/形容词最高级前
例: January is the first month of the year. 一月是一年当中的第一个月。
Spring is the best season here. 春天是这里最好的季节。
Shanghai is the biggest city in China.
上海是中国最大的城市。
（七）表示世界上独一无二的事物
例: the sun 太阳 the earth 地球
the sky 天空
the world 世界
（八）用于乐器名词前表演奏（注意与球类的区别）
例: play the piano 弹钢琴 play the violin 拉小提琴
play basketball 打篮球 play baseball 打棒球
（九）固定用法：the+比较级……the+比较级……：表示越……越……
例: The earlier you start , the sooner you’ll be back. 你出发越早，回来得就越早。
The more you drink, the more you like it.
你越喝就越爱喝。

（十）与某些形容词连用，具有名词含义，即：the+形容词=名词，复数用法：
例: the rich 富人 the sick 病人
the young年轻人 the poor穷人
the sick 病人 the wounded 伤员
the good 好人 the beautiful 美丽的事物
the deaf 聋哑人the blind盲人
